A Budgeting App That Keeps Your Data Private

Privacy in a budgeting app mostly comes down to how many parties end up holding a copy of your financial data, and what happens to it after that. MoneyFlow keeps that list short by not connecting to your bank in the first place.

Who holds your data in a bank-linked app

The CFPB's overview of personal financial data rights describes a bank-linked setup as involving at least three separate parties: your bank, the data aggregator that handles the connection, and the app you're using. Each holds a copy of your data and has its own security practices and its own risk of being breached.

What MoneyFlow does instead

There's no bank connection, so there's no aggregator in the chain and nothing pulled from your bank automatically. You log your own entries, and by default that data stays on your device. Signing in only enables the optional Cloud Sync feature - it's never required to use MoneyFlow, and it's off unless you turn it on.

No ads, no selling data

MoneyFlow doesn't run ads and doesn't sell your data. Revenue comes from people who choose to subscribe to Pro, not from your attention or your information. Full details are in the privacy policy.

This is the same reasoning behind budgeting without bank account linking and offline budgeting.

Frequently asked questions

Does MoneyFlow sell or share my financial data?+

No. MoneyFlow doesn't sell data and doesn't show ads. See the full details in the privacy policy.

Where does my data live if I don't turn on Cloud Sync?+

On your device only. There's no server copy of your entries unless you specifically opt into the optional Cloud Sync feature.

How many parties end up with a copy of my data in a bank-linked app?+

Typically at least three: your bank, the data aggregator that handles the connection, and the app itself. Each is a separate system with its own security practices. MoneyFlow removes two of those three by not connecting to a bank at all.

Is a privacy-focused budgeting app less capable than one that links your bank?+

Not in MoneyFlow's case - Safe-to-Spend, net worth, and debt payoff tracking all run the same way on manually entered data as they would on imported data. The tradeoff is more typing, not fewer features.
