What is Safe-to-Spend?

Safe-to-Spend is your income, minus everything you've already committed to - bills, debt payments, subscriptions, and savings goals - minus what you've spent so far this period. What's left is the one number that matters: what you can spend right now without putting next month's plans at risk.

It's not your bank balance. Your bank balance includes money you've already promised to your rent, your car payment, your emergency fund goal - money that isn't really "yours" to spend today, even though it's sitting in your account.

Why a monthly budget isn't enough

Traditional budgeting resets on the 1st of the month and assumes your income and expenses land on a tidy calendar. Most people's money doesn't work that way:

  • You get paid mid-month, or every two weeks, or irregularly if you freelance or work hourly
  • Bills and subscriptions renew on their own schedule, not yours
  • A single "monthly budget" number doesn't tell you if you can afford something today

Safe-to-Spend fixes this by recalculating continuously, based on your actual income timing and actual commitments - not a fixed monthly reset.

How MoneyFlow calculates it

Safe-to-Spend = Income − (Bills + Debt payments + Subscriptions + Goal contributions) − Spending so far

Every category you track in MoneyFlow feeds this number automatically:

  • Income you log powers the calculation
  • Bills and Subscriptions are subtracted as committed, even before they're due
  • Debt payments are counted so you're never "spending" money that's already earmarked
  • Goals hold back what you've promised to your future self
  • Spending so far this period is subtracted in real time

You get one honest answer, not five numbers to reconcile yourself.

Get an early warning before you overspend

MoneyFlow flags it before you're in trouble, not after. If a purchase would push your Safe-to-Spend negative, you see it before you're already overdrawn on next month's bills - not after your credit card statement arrives.

Who this is built for

If your pay doesn't land on the 1st, or you're juggling bills, a debt payoff, savings goals, and spending all at once, a fixed monthly budget was never going to work for you. Safe-to-Spend is built for real income timing, not the calendar's.

Frequently asked questions

Is Safe-to-Spend the same as my bank balance?

No. Your bank balance doesn't account for upcoming bills, debt payments, or savings goals you've committed to. Safe-to-Spend subtracts those first, so what's left is genuinely available.

Does it update automatically?

Yes. Every time you log income, spending, a bill, or a subscription, your Safe-to-Spend number updates immediately.

Is Safe-to-Spend free?

Yes, it's a core, free feature in MoneyFlow - not gated behind Pro.

Does MoneyFlow need to connect to my bank?

No. MoneyFlow is offline-first - you log your numbers, and your data stays on your device.
